Back To New Basics

Most of the team is now back at the office. A few are near Red Zones and not yet allowed to travel into the city. For those that are able to make it to the office, a few regulations have to be followed for the meantime. All need to be distanced apart. Sanitise on entry. Wear a mask. Wear an ID card.

Everyone is enjoying being back together as a team. I am sure the routine of office life is a welcome change from being cooped up at home. Slowly but surely, life is returning to a new normal.

Public transport is supposed to be social distanced, but it is hard given the population. Fortunately, few of our team have to rely on buses. Motorbikes and scooters are the order of the day. Travelling by auto-rickshaw will no doubt quickly return to normal. Squeeze 'em in like sardines.

Mind you, local Vizagites are generally very compliant to civic regulations. The locals band together and help when needed and follow the rules to protect the greater good. One of our crew did try and go out for a Sunday drive during the lockdown, however he was snapped by the police, promptly fined, and sent home with his tail between his legs.

Iscah "Boss" Taylor

Life on campus in Jeypore is hectic to say the least. Looking after all those kids takes brains, guts and a lot of love. Andrea and Jason could not function without the help of Andrea's sister Iscah. Who I like to call the real "Boss" of running things.

Iscah is a tough cookie. She knows how to love the kids and keep them on the straight and narrow. She is "the woman about town" knowing all the right locals to source supplies from - and crack the right deals. You can't put one over her that's for sure. At times Andrea and Jason need to get away, and knowing Iscah is there to take charge assures everything runs smoothly.

What Is The New Normal?

One thing for sure is that people quickly return to their comfort zones. No matter what, we love our routines. Many of us have not been through an event with such global effect. We have experienced civil liberty restrictions unmatched this century.

But, we coped. We walked more if we could. Our couches got crumpled. Netflix got boring. We cooked. We survived.

However, many businesses took a hit. The losses are spreading out. We are still riding a wave of uncertainty to some degree. Sadly, many jobs have gone. Some will never return. The new day is a dark day for many. But one thing is for sure - we need to keep going.

Fear of Covid-19 has changed everything. No matter what our personal perspective is, our base level of human interaction has shifted. Over time the fear that hinders many will wane. Moving forward we will do a few things differently that will become the new familiar. Soon, it will all be routine again.

Let’s make our new familiar great. Generally people care. Fundamentally most of us are willing to give anyone a hand. Now, more than ever, we need to look around and see what we can do and make a conscious effort to look after the welfare of others. Chin up. Make smiles contagious.
